In 1864 Antonín
Petrof (1839-1915), the founder of the Petrof firm, began to construct his first
piano in joiner's workshop run by his father. A decade later, he had to
establish a larger workshop outside the walls of Hradec Králové. In the next
decades, the instruments of the Petrof trademark won a good name even abroad. A
branch was founded in Vienna and the Antonín Petrof Company became the largest
producer of pianos in Austria-Hungary. After the birth of the Czechoslovak
Republic, the company expanded its activities to countries outside Europe. In
1935, Petrof's grand piano won the world expo in Brussels. At present the
company is managed by the fourth and the fifth generation of the Petrof family
and its top-quality products are in great demand in large concert halls and
households alike.
